| September 19 – 22 Birmingham. ~ Rest and Chore Days – With a few days to spare, we made good use of our time, cleaning the RV, restocking, showering, answering email, going to the pool, shopping. After 2 days, we were “antsy to ride”. Bobby and Alinda took a short spin. On Friday, Debbie and Dean Nakos prepared a “to die for” vegetarian meal. On Saturday, we feasted at the Siegs – Lebanese style. More than 25 people celebrated our arrival in Birmingham. |
This cake was so pretty it was hard to cut.
|
| September 23, Sunday – 54.50 miles, Dickert, AL (8 miles east of Pine Mountain, GA) – We departed Birmingham with tons of leftovers, a restocked refrigerator, and energy to burn. Arriving in Dickert, AL, with our new sag man “Tom Terrific” and new rider Jack Burke of Charleston, WV, we happily hopped on our bikes. Jack was surprised by the hills, loved the cotton fields, and enjoyed the homes and obvious history of Alabama. We crossed into Georgia and ended the day at an RV park in Pine Mountain, GA, outside Calloway Gardens – quite a lovely area. |
|
| September 24, Monday – 8 miles east of Pine Mountain, GA, - 2 miles east of Ft. Valley, GA, Distance – 94.5 miles – “A Rainy Night in Georgia” preceded a drizzling day for the riders. Temperature in low 70’s. Many small towns. The real ride was Pine Mountain. We rode every direction of Pine Mountain including the 10-mile ridge. We visited “FDR’s Little White House” and learned more about FDR and the 1925-1945 era. We saw the “Unfinished Portrait of FDR” – he died while the artist was painting and upon his collapse, the artist never made another stroke to the portrait. FDR died of cerebral hemorrhage – stroke. I thank God for Bobby’s recovery. The day’s ride ended with pecan groves on both sides of the road. A GREAT DAY TO RIDE! |
|
| SEPTEMBER 25, Tuesday – 2 miles east of Ft. Valley, GA, Distance – 108.5 miles – Jack Burke, 59 years old (young), joined us for the final week. Today, he accomplished his greatest mileage – 108.5 miles. We celebrated with McFlurries. Pecan groves and cotton, peanuts, and soybean fields lined our path. The roads were very good and the Willie Nelson song, “Blue Sky Following Me” was the tune of the day. |

September 26, Wednesday – Denmark, GA, Distance – 51 miles – With thoughts of a shrimp feast, we pedaled over rolling hills.
Arriving in Statesboro, we feasted and relaxed at Bill Ray and Nancy Perrine’s – sloppy joes, shrimp, macaroni salad, brownies, and
chocolate chip cookies. This food makes the trip worth every minute. |
|
September 27, Thursday– After an interview with Eric, a news writer from the Statesboro newspaper, we headed off for Savannah. Finally after 3000 miles, the downhill and flats appeared. Traffic into Savannah was tough – road construction and typical “city” mentality. We arrived at Skidaway Island State Park, our home for 2 nights. The trees are filled with Spanish moss and the park is known for its nature programs on alligators, woodpeckers, and flora. We have heard and seen military airplanes since our arrival – an unusual sound for us.
|
September 28, Friday – Rest day, Savannah, GA – Jack departed early via airplane for Charleston. We named him “Laundry Jack” –
some how he found a way to do laundry almost everyday of his journey. Jack, at 59, had accomplished many personal goals, his
longest ride – 108 miles, 5 consecutive days of cycling, and a total of more than 350 miles in 5 days. Great Job!
Rosemary had joined us on Thursday. So Tom, Nick, Rosemary Bobby and Alinda put on walking shoes for the Savannah sights and preview of Tybee Island. The temperature was mid 80’s and a comfortable breeze. We located the Pavilion and Ocean Beach Resort and planned the final leg of the journey. As we bedded down the wind began to blow. |

September 29, Saturday – Distance 28 miles – Skidaway State Park to Tybee Island – Our final morning ride – definitely into the
wind. As we dressed, I asked, “Do you all feel like Lance Armstrong getting ready for the Victory Lap?”
They laughed, but each of us felt a sense of accomplishment. Realizing that we were riding thru Savannah, we decided the “squaw escort” method, would be appropriate. 60-degree temperature and a headwind were the final cards, but we were pumped.      A white Explorer with WV plates passed us, rolled down the window and yelled. It was Rebel – our hearts leaped with excitement. As we rounded the turn into Tybee Island, the wind was behind us.      At last, a tail wind and a long flat to the Pavilion. We cruised, laughed and lined up horizontally for the finish. With the turn came the wind, sand blowing, and no thought of our cycle shoes, we approached the beach bicycles held high. Our supporters were on the pier, on the beach, cheering us – we were with front tires in the Atlantic. |

Celebration Party –hugs, wet feet, and victory in our hearts we joined hands on the beach (as we had done on our Pacific departure)
and said a Circle Prayer, thanking God for protection, blessings, opportunities, and friendship. Our Pavilion Party was moved to the
parking lot to avoid the cold wind. Mom (Shirley Perrine) took over and in minutes combined all the goodies for lunch. Stories of
Crossing America caused rolls of laughter.
Tybee Island Celebrators: The Perrine Crew – Shirley and Doc Perrine (Alinda’s mom and dad), Lewisburg, WV; Susie (Alinda’s sister), Holly, Autumn Bagwell, Clarksville, TN; Jeanne (Alinda’s sister) and Terry Neal and Chloe Ellis, Atlanta, GA; Bill Ray and Nancy Perrine, Statesboro, GA; Rebel Blake , Lewisburg, WV; Pete, Bernadette, Zack and Thomas Propst (Pete & Bobby are Navy buddies), Daytona Beach, FL; Tom, Rosemary Sieg (Nick’s folks), Birmingham, AL; Stacey (Nick’s high school friend) now lives in Savannah, GA. With some of the celebration crew departing for home, The Propsts, Rebel, Bobby and Alinda were headed for the “Crab Shack” Restaurant (a “must do” place to eat). Pat Wilfong, a West Virginia pal appears. She was a welcome sight. Smiles and determination. September 30, Sunday – Depart Tybee Island to Charlotte. October 1, Monday – 15 Miles – Had to ride the bikes before the final trip home. But the big surprise of the day was the Welcome Home Party. Leading the hug was Sam Whitrow, and Janie Kortas. Thanks to all our friends and family for the balloons, food, flowers, banners. What a spectacular way to come home. |

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS FOR THIS ISSUE :
PS Still one update to follow with our "at home shared experience"
It's great to be back home again. We went over to Sam Withrow's on a georgous fall day and she took this picture.     It's a great country, but WV is still our favorite biking choice, with it's reasonable grades and spectacular vistas.
