The Route

Six grade students in Kim Rodes and Susanna Robinson’s class at Mountain View School learned about America as they followed, via Internet, Dr. Alinda Perrine and Bobby Guet of Lewisburg, WV. Alinda and Bobby bicycled 3,013 miles across the United States, during August 19th to September 28, 200l. As schoolbegan, students logged onto www.freespiritadventures.com/ and began to learn mapping skills, geography, history and facts about each state. The students became interested in California, Native American, western and southern cultures. The cyclists journaled each day’s ride with mileage, time, elevation and people they encountered; thus, the students learned the physical demands of cycling as an endurance sport.

The kids were great, we all had fun learning.

In October, the students gave a “Welcome Home Party” to Bobby and Alinda. During a classroom presentation of”We Cycle America,” the couple, dressed in cycling attire, shared pictures and artifacts and answered questions about the trip. The highlight for the students was touring the 33.5 ft. sport utility recreational vehicle used for living and support during the journey. Bobby and Alinda presented the students with American pencils purchased at Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home, “The Little White House” in Warm Springs, GA. The students presented a “Victory Cake” to the riders. Both students and cyclists felt a special bond as they had learned about America together.

The other day I told Bobby:
"Someday when we are old and can't ride a bike (maybe at 100 or so) let's talk about our trip and pretend we are there."

He agreed and I know we will.

It's great to be back home again. We went over to Sam Withrow's on a georgous fall day and she took this picture.

It's a great country, but WV is still our favorite biking choice, with it's reasonable grades and spectacular vistas.

WV is still our favorite biking choice.
